Accountancy allows you take control - of your job, your finances, your life and your future. Those who have reached the top come from many different backgrounds, and recognised at an early stage of their career that the ACCA qualification would open doors.
What is the ACCA?
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the largest and fastest-growing global professional body with students and members in over 170 countries. ACCA qualifications are designed to help students looking for a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management.
How long will it take?:
On average, an individual registering with the minimum entry requirements, working full-time and studying on a part-time basis would take approximately three to four years to gain their ACCA qualification. However, depending on your previous qualifications and relevant practical experience, you can complete the qualification much more quickly. A graduate with a relevant degree and a couple of year’s relevant experience could complete the qualification in as little as one or two years. When you complete the nine ACCA Fundamental papers you will be able to apply for the BSc (Hons) in Applied Accountancy from Oxford Brookes University. Fully qualified ACCA members are eligible to apply for MBA from Oxford Brooks University.
The ACCA Qualification
In order to qualify as an ACCA member, you will need to complete:
- 14 exams (up to nine of which are eligible for exemption)
- Relevant practical experience, with a minimum of three years
- A Professional Ethics module
The breadth and depth of the ACCA Qualification means that you develop the fundamental knowledge to work across all sectors before specialising on the core technical skills necessary for your role.
The fundamentals level covers the core areas of financial and management accounting, plus the main technical areas that any accountant will need to master. The professional level builds on this and explores more advanced technical skills, techniques and values. The options modules give you the ability to develop specialist skills relevant to the areas of accountancy that interest you the most.

ACCA Qualification trainees who have passed their exams but have not yet qualified for membership are referred to as affiliates.
Affiliates have the achievement of passing the exams, however are still trainees working towards completing ACCA’s practical experience requirements (PER) with the goal of qualifying for membership.
ACCA’s practical experience requirement (PER) is a key component of the ACCA Qualification. To become an ACCA member all trainees – students and affiliates – must successfully complete:
• the ACCA exams
• the Professional Ethics Module*
• the practical experience requirement.
ACCA’s PER is based on the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) International Education Standard 5, Practical Experience Requirements. ACCA’s PER develops trainees’ professional knowledge and values, ethics and attitudes required to perform their work with professional competence. The students should obtain 36 months PER to apply for membership.
Four main components of the PER are as follows:
• achieve nine (9) Essentials and at least four (4) Options performance objectives (making a total of 13 or more) to the satisfaction of your workplace mentor
• record and report your PER progress through the trainee development matrix (TDM)*
• complete 36 months’ experience in one or more accounting or finance-related roles
