English + Garment Construction
Do you dream about dress making or wish you could create your own clothes? Well perhaps a course in garment construction is for you.
Learners will develop an understanding of cutting, construction, how to use sewing machines and pressing of a variety of fabrics and will know the importance of making up a garment. Please bring a simple design of yours.
The course will cover:
- Adaptation of patterns to create simple style
- General construction methods
- Fitting of garment
- Finishing methods of pressing
- Create a new garment
The class size is limited so you will have one to one time with your tutor.
The tutor is Lorraine Mitchell who also runs courses in Fashion Design. She runs workshops at the Victoria & Albert Museum and has many contacts in the tailoring world. Previous students have been offered the chance to visit Savile Row.
Students need to bring:
- White cotton fabric ( for garment sample ). 2 metres to start with.
- Sewing needles.
- Sewing pins.
- Dressmaking scissors.

General English: 9 AM to 12:15 PM from Monday to Friday (Edgware Academy campus)
Garment Construction classes: 6 PM to 9 PM Monday (City of Westminster College Paddington Green Campus)
There will be no class on 17 February due to half term.
Registration fee: 120 GBP
Minimum Intermediate level of English (CEFR B1)
Suitable for beginners, no previous experience is required
Students who complete at least 80% of the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance both from Edgware Academy and Westminster College.
